Product Description

The Riveter has always championed longform stories that have a long shelf-life. Issue 6 is no exception, but we think that the interviews, investigations and images you’ll find in our latest issue are truly of their time as well.

We decided we wanted to feature Minnesota State Rep. Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American woman (or man) to ever be elected to a state legislative office, long before she won her election, or Hillary Clinton lost hers, on Nov. 8, 2016. But in the dark first few hours of Nov. 9, this feature was something we clung to.

Ilhan’s thoughts on reflective democracy, and her reimagining of the American Dream, are what we all needed and will continue to need over the next four years. In addition to our longform interview with Ilhan, Issue 6 includes a longform article about the ways in which women have assumed more leadership roles in traditionally male Islamic spaces, as well as two transformative photo essays. One shows another side of life for transwomen in Peru, with the other exploring through powerful photos and accompanying interviews how the drought in Somaliland has disproportionately affected women.

We styled a photoshoot exploring how the “feminist tee” has bubbled up from the Internet and even on to the runway, and you don’t want to miss either of the personal essays in this issue. Oh, and we’re serving up a double dish of our Canon — double the books for you to spring forward with!
